• Colour & Design

When planning a new home, it’s important to think about colour and how it relates to the design of your home – and do this as early in the process as you can. Colour plays a vital role in our lives because colour can be used to evoke emotion and create mood within a home but it can also be used to reflect our personalities and give our homes an individual touch.

When you think about colours for your home, you’re not only thinking about walls and floors although, of course, these tend to be the larger blocks of colour within most homes. But also think about textures and natural tones such as wood or stone that can enhance a colour scheme.

In the living areas, we tend to choose colours that are more neutral which allows for accessorising with pops of brighter tones to add accents but don’t rule out the idea of a feature wall to create an immediate visual impact. Lighter colours and tones tend to make spaces feel larger so it’s more usual go opt for whites, creams and beiges for cornices and ceilings.

In smaller rooms such as the bathroom, think about how you can use colour to create mood and heighten relaxation. For a parents’ retreat, for example, you might choose a laid back colour scheme that is more muted but in a child’s bathroom you might opt for primary colours or bright tones that project a happy outlook.

In the kitchen, colours and textures can be used to create complementary spaces, particularly where the kitchen and living room and/or dining room intersect. Colours and changing materials can be used to visually delineate a variety of work spaces without introducing a physical boundary. And here’s where lighting can really play a key role in the success of the home’s design – different hues of light (whether warms or colds) can be used to meet a variety of needs while the latest LEDs can highlight areas of visual interest.

And don’t forget the outside of your home. Whether you opt for a brick or rendered finish, colour can be used to set the tone from the moment your visitor pulls up in your driveway.
